Joao Paulo Souza dedicates to transform maternal health with the aim of ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths and ensuring that women and children reach their full potential. Trained as an obstetrician and gynaecologist with a specialization in intensive care medicine, Joao Paulo Souza carried out doctorate studies in maternal health epidemiology. With extensive experience in Global Health, Joao Paulo Souza is a former Professor of Social Medicine at the University of São Paulo (Brazil).  He published over 150 scientific papers and provided technical support for the development of international and national policies related to maternal health. Joao Paulo Souza is based at the Department of Reproductive Health and Research, World Health Organization (Geneva, Switzerland),  where he focuses on the development of innovations to leverage the expertise of health providers (particularly decision support tools) and research and development of solutions for reducing maternal and newborn mortality related to sepsis.
